What to expect when going to a therapist?

Maybe you're feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or just not quite yourself.

Life has its challenges, and sometimes, talking to a professional can make a real difference.

But what exactly happens when you go to a therapist?

That’s where I come in! Today, we’ll explore what you should expect when you start therapy.

Feeling Nervous is Normal

If you’re feeling a bit nervous or apprehensive about starting therapy, it’s entirely normal. Talking about your struggles can be difficult, but it's also courageous.

A great therapist will ensure you feel safe and supported to share openly and honestly.

How to Choose the Right Therapist

Finding the right therapist for you is essential, much like finding the perfect pair of shoes – it must be a good fit.

Look for a therapist who specializes in the areas you need help with.

For example, if you're struggling with anxiety, a therapist who specializes in anxiety disorders might be a good choice.

It's also important to consider their approach to therapy and whether it resonates with you.

What Can You Expect in Your First Therapy Session?

Therapy sessions are about you and your well-being; in the first session, we'll just get to know each other.

I need to understand your wants, needs, expectations, and background, while you need to see if you'll feel comfortable working with me.

Don't be shy about sharing your stressors and what coping skills have worked for you in the past (and which ones haven't).

Remember, there's no pressure to discuss anything you're uncomfortable with. I want you to feel comfortable and safe.

So, the First Session

Not everything on this list will or can be covered during your first session, but it'll give you a comprehensive starting point.

  • Background Information. Our session will begin by getting to know you better, starting with your medical history and previous mental health experiences. This helps me understand your overall health picture.
  • Sharing Your Story. This is your chance to talk about what brings you to therapy. Are you struggling with anxiety, depression, or another mental health concern? Perhaps you're dealing with a chronic illness and need support. Whatever it is, only share what you're comfortable with.
  • Setting Goals. Together, we will create achievable goals to guide your therapy journey. What do you hope to achieve? Maybe you want to manage stress better, improve communication skills, or develop healthier coping mechanisms. Having clear goals helps us track progress and measure success.
  • Understanding Your Stressors. We'll discuss what's causing you stress or making your symptoms worse. This might include things like work, relationships, or health concerns. Identifying your stressors is an instrumental step in developing coping strategies.
  • Coping Skills. We'll discuss your current coping mechanisms. What works well for you? What areas should benefit from improvement? We can explore different coping skills and techniques that might be helpful.
  • Learning Resources. If there is something specific you'd like to learn more about, we can explore resources like websites, books, or support groups. These can be valuable tools to supplement your therapy sessions.
  • Next Steps. We'll chat about the next steps in your therapy journey. This might include scheduling follow-up appointments, discussing payment options, and clarifying any questions about insurance coverage.

What Questions Should You Ask Your Therapist?

Your first session is a perfect opportunity to ask me questions. Think about questions like:

  • What is your experience treating conditions similar to mine?
  • What type of therapy do you practice?
  • How often will we meet, and for how long?
  • What can I expect from therapy sessions?
  • How will you (and I) know if the therapy is working?

Follow-Up and Next Steps

At the end of our first session, we'll discuss a follow-up plan, schedule availability, and decide on a frequency that works for you.

Remember, therapy is a two-way street. I'm here to help you achieve your goals and offer unwavering support.
